GEO complements SEO, it does not replace it. Generative engine optimization (GEO) makes sure that generative AI systems such as ChatGPT or Gemini recommend your brand, product or service. Search engine optimization (SEO), by contrast, is about being linked in Google Search. Both matter for companies to be found organically online.
The 3 most important differences
1. The format: links or summaries
SEO: Classic SEO makes your website appear as a link in Google (or another search engine). This is still how most people search the internet, which is why SEO remains at the core of organic visibility. The aim is to show up in the classic list of blue links so that users can choose which page to visit.
GEO: GEO works differently. Instead of a place in a ranking, the aim is to be mentioned or cited in the answers that AI tools generate. Users often get a summary, a comparison or a recommendation directly, without visiting a website. This also applies to conversations over several turns, which adds complexity.
2. The goal: clicks or visibility
SEO: The classic goal of SEO is traffic to your own website. Success is measured by rankings, click-through rates and the number of visitors from search results. The more people click the link, the better the website performs. From there the journey continues: visitors who explore other parts of the site may end up buying something.
GEO: GEO has a different main goal: visibility in the answer. If ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews cite or mention you, you build awareness and authority even if nobody visits your website. Beyond visibility itself, GEO is also about the kind of visibility: the information the AI gives should be factually correct, and negative or harmful statements should be kept as small as possible. Often the AI already answers the question in full, so nobody clicks. The click-through rate (CTR) is correspondingly lower and plays only a minor role in GEO.
3. The sources: your own website or third parties
SEO: In traditional SEO, the main source of visibility is your own website and all its pages. Success depends on how well the pages are optimized, structured and linked from other sites (backlinks). Search engines crawl and rank the content. Most of the work is therefore building strong pages, earning backlinks and making sure Google can easily understand and index the content.
GEO: GEO shifts the focus without making SEO unimportant. AI answer engines often prefer and cite third-party sources such as trade publications, review platforms, news media, studies and other independent mentions rather than purely brand-owned content. A page that ranks first on Google can still be ignored by ChatGPT or Perplexity if the model finds more credible or more widely confirmed information elsewhere.
What this means for Swiss companies
GEO is an evolution of SEO. Only the combination of both methods leads companies to success. Strong content, clear copy and recognizable brands work in both SEO and GEO and remain the best way to be visible to customers online.
If you are new to the topic, consider SEO and GEO together. If you are already optimized for SEO, GEO is the growing channel you should analyze and work on. Which AI systems matter in Switzerland is shown in our overview of AI systems in Switzerland.
